(On Gandhian leader Nirmala Deshpande and Marxist leader Anuradha Gandhy)
India lost two great women activists to death.
One of them was known be a paragon of death, while the other wasseen as a danger to national security.
Well, we all know about Ms.Nirmala Deshpande, a noted gandhian, who remained single because of her utmost devotion to Vinobha Bhave, sarvodya leader .Nirmala tai,as she was known was also Manasputri or adopted daughter of Vinobha ji.
She undertook arduous padyatras or march for the sake of peace. She was widely known as a peacenik .
However, the other 'Gandhy' was also remarkable force to reckon with! Anuradha Gandhy was a Marxist ideologue ,who was underground since a long time.
This former professor of sociology was a firebrand activist.
She and her husband were known to be marxist thinkers of the highest order.
One may ask, what makes her noted.
Well, she worked with thepeasants andthe other underprivileged strata. She left her lavish life style and broke off her relationship with her kin and kith. She was all that what the anti communist is not!
Nirmala ji, was a longtime member of Rajya Sabha and also fought presidential elections. She was also conferred with "PadmaVibushan", the second highest civilian award of the largest democracy.
Unlike her,Ms. Gandhy shunned everything to join armed rebellion. For many years, she lived in subhuman conditions and faced messengers of death,
be it cops, rival political forces and deadly diseases !
While NirmalaDeshpande died in her official residence but Ms Gandhy died ofMalaria, which caught in some tropical jungle. The first one was cremated with state honour and the other without a fuss.
Jyoti Punwani , a veteran journalist writes in Times Of India, that though she was a rebel but
her death has left many questions unanswered. It poses a serious question- what compels well read minds to accept path of violence!
In this consumerist era, when Gandhism has become a brand, we need to pay attention to the different aspects.
Nirmala deshpande could be among the last Gandhains but there could be many anuradha gandhys among us!

Dear M,
A lay citizen understands that Fauzis have no high opinion of our political class.
Thus,I appreciate your voice of discontent.

Dear A,
You can call it X factor.
There are many PFs who feel an urge to do something new!
However, the core question is -are we doing enough for the underprivileged !

I agree Ashish: There are more Gandhys than there are Deshpande's and that is the danger to the present order in India. It is imperetive for the lot of the bottom 20 or 30% to be improved also of the economy that has not been touched by globalization, to prevent Marxists attacks on India.

My Dear Dimiri
One was a naxal leader, the other one was a Indira loyalist, I don't think they made a major impact to the society. I believe both carried ideological burden which I feel did not allow them to do justice.
Thanks & Regards

Ashish,
Haven't heard about either ladies...until now...so am not qualified to comment on their respective achievements...choices in life etc...
However, you have posed an interesting question...why do well read minds fall for violent means...
and why the Mahatma did not...
This calls for an analysis...will you be kind enough ta do that?

Dear Ashish,
You have done great service by bringing in to the open two great lives that treaded this era. One that was a staunch follower of peace and non-violence and joined the brigade of Vinobha to achieve an egalitarian society depicting a Ram Rajya and the other who had found the democratic path frustrating in the achievement of an equitable and just society where any means were not sacrosanct for its achievement. Each had its flourishes, failings and limitations, but the guiding spirit in their lives and the ultimate aim was focussed on the general public that belonged to the lowest classes among the rural poor whose ambitions had been stiffled and suffered from the yoke of years of over-lordism.

Dear Tanu,
Ms Gandhy was a marxist thinker.
She was a former lecturer of sociology but left everything to work with peasant movement in Maharastra.
I will certainly write more about her .
